Yesterday, Porto Alegre celebrated 229 years. The city was created on March 26th, 1772 as São Francisco do Porto dos Casais parish, when it became an entity independent from Viamão. Before, it was inhabited by “guaranis” natives. In 1735, Jerônino de Ornelas and some cattleman coming from São Paulo arrived; and in 1752, 60 Azorean couples, which were intended to populate Jacuí river margin arrived and remained here. In 1772, the village emancipated from Viamão. The city, honored in poetry and prose, has got a superb landscape, of which we can highlight an admirable bay and a superior sunset.

b) This "gaúcho" is a noteworthy and dear character; he has come from São Borja, a city located on the border of Rio Grande do Sul and Argentina, native home of the former Presidents Getúlio Vargas and João Goulart. He’s a fervent "brizolista" and, sometimes, he comes to criticize and “advise” the State Governor Olívio Dutra, in front of Palácio Piratini:  1

c) Monument in honor of Júlio de Castilhos, in Matriz Square. Júlio de Castilhos was governor of the state in the late XIX century and in the beginning of the XX century. The monument highlights the strong positivist and republican ideals, which have influenced the State and the country for several decades. Carlos Barbosa, who, at the time, was the State Governor has ordered the statue, in 1913. It was in honor of this “gaúcho”, born in “Vila Rica” (today Júlio de Castilhos city  - RS), in 1860. Júlio de Castilhos was the commander of the republican “woodpeckers”. He defeated the “maragatos” during the Federalist War in 1893. After his death, the command has gone to Antônio Augusto Borges. The work was sculpted by Décio Villares and highlights the practical man character. On its right, the Courage, with one shut eye and holding the victory laurels; on the top, the Prudence stops the impulses, pointing at the dangers and, on the left, the athletic Resolution celebrates the leader determination, and to culminate, the Civism holds the national flag, a symbol of the love that impels the great deeds:  12,  3456,  78,  9,  1011,  12,  13

The Horse Track allows expressing two important gaúchos’ predilections: freedom from modern live and the value of traditional rural habits. Along the way, men, women, and children were greeted by the people on dozens of beaches they passed by.

In Rio Grande do Sul, February is the "high summer season". Half the population takes vacation in January, and the other half in February. That is why, during this period Porto Alegre is quite empty, with less people and cars on the streets. The people go to beaches like Dunas Altas (near Quintão, Palmares do Sul), Torres (including Quintão, Balneário Pinhal, Cidreira, Tramandaí, Imbé, Xangri-lá, Capão da Canoa, Arroio do Sal, as well as to the beaches in the state of Santa Catarina, mainly Florianópolis, Camboriú, Garopaba and Bombinhas:  12,  3

Meeting of the Gaucha Association in Support to Areas Interested in Becoming a Municipio (AGEA), in the Committee of Municipal Affairs at the State Parliament. Today the state has 497 municipalities and around 30 areas interested in becoming a municipality during the period from 2001 to 2004.  Among the new municipalities (after 1981, there were 265 new ones), many of them are listed by the UN as the Brazilian cities, which give the best care to their children. Part of the economic development to the state is due to these new municipalities. The President of the Committee, Giovani Cherini, comes from a new city created in 1993 (Mormaço-RS):  12,  3

Among the areas interested in becoming a municipality there are:

- Itapuã Village, district of Viamão-RS, 20 Km away from Porto Alegre-RS, and an important ecological area (see the village pictures  - 21/01/2001);

- Vale Vêneto, district of São João do Polesine-RS, located near Silveira Martins city, which was part of the 4th Italian Colony of Rio Grande do Sul, in Santa Maria hills. During the 1930's, it was famous for its schools.  Every year,  an important international musical meeting, including workshops of classical and popular music takes place.

- Balneário de Quintão, district of Palmares do Sul-RS, located 40 km away.  It is a traditional beach, with dozens of thousands of people during the summer season. With its 15m high sand dunes, good fishing sea and quit preserved nature, it is deal for summer vacation.
